MENTORING

It's not about how long we live but about how fully we live

"It's not about how long we live, but about how fully we live."

Every now and then, you come across a sentence that makes you stop. Not because it's complicated, but because it's true. When I first read those words this morning, I realised they weren't really about time at all. They were about authenticity and I had to sit down and write my first article for my new website (even though the website isn't even finished).

Most of us spend years trying to become the person we think we're supposed to be. We follow expectations, wear masks, hide parts of ourselves, and avoid difficult conversations because we're afraid of being judged. Afraid of what the consequences will be.

For many men, that includes their sexuality, kinks and desires. It includes the questions they never ask because they are too afraid of what the answers mean. It includes the desires they never speak about and the fantasies they convince themselves make them "different." And more often than not, they push away the relationships they long for but never pursue.

The truth is that shame has an incredible ability to shrink our lives. It encourages us to survive rather than truly live.

Existing isn't the same as living... repeat that to yourself a few times and let it sink in.

You can have a successful career, a busy social life, and still feel like you're living only a fraction of who you really are. You can spend years pretending that certain thoughts, feelings, or desires don't exist.

The truth for many men is simple, from the outside, everything may appear normal yet on the inside, however, they may feel disconnected from their true selves.

I want to make it quiet clear that living fully doesn't mean saying yes to everything or acting on every impulse but it does mean understanding yourself honestly enough to make choices that are aligned with your values, your relationships, and the life you genuinely want to build.

This sense of freedom begins with self-awareness, not self-judgment. Accepting who you are is the starting point of living with authenticity. What I know for sure is that one of the greatest misconceptions about authenticity is that it requires dramatic change.

It doesn't. Authenticity begins with acceptance. It really is that simple. Acceptance is simply acknowledging what is true about yourself without immediately trying to change it or punish yourself for it. As you start to live authentically, you make discover the following:

  • A fantasy is just that, a fantasy.

  • A kink has become part of your identity.

  • You've been living according to someone else's expectations for years.

None of this means that are broken or that you need fixing or punishing. I mean this with all of my heart, having desires is simply part of being human.

The Elements of Authenticity

The framework for mentoring at Mentropolis.

At Mentropolis, I believe authentic living is a journey rather than a destination and that journey is guided by four elements.

Acceptance

Recognise who you are without shame.

Acceptance creates the foundation for everything that follows.

Exploration

Become curious rather than critical.

Explore your thoughts, desires, relationships, and emotions with honesty instead of fear.

Expression

Find the confidence to communicate your truth.

Whether that's with a partner, a trusted friend, or simply with yourself, expression transforms understanding into connection.

Renewal

When shame begins to lose its grip, something remarkable happens.

You create space for growth.

You begin making choices based on authenticity instead of fear.

When I take about renewal, I like to refer to the element of fire. Renewal feels like fire clearing old ground for new life, renewal isn't about becoming someone different. It's about allowing your true self to emerge with authenticity.

Living fully does not need living perfectly. Let's be really honest, there is no such thing as a perfect life. Life is made up of challenges, setbacks, doubts, and moments when we question ourselves... living fully isn't about eliminating those experiences. But it is about refusing to let fear write the story of your life.

Every honest conversation.

Every moment of self-acceptance.

Every boundary you communicate.

Every decision that reflects your authentic self.

These are the moments that create a life lived fully.

A Final Thought

None of us knows how much time we have.

What we do have is this very moment.

Today is another opportunity to stop hiding, stop pushing back and stop believing the narrative others want us to believe. And what is more, today is another opportunity to understand yourself with compassion instead of criticism. An opportunity to take one small step towards living more authentically.

Because in the end, it isn't measured by how many years we live, it's measured by how honestly, courageously, and fully we choose to live them.

"It's not about how long we live, but about how fully we live."

If you're ready to begin that journey, Mentropolis is here to walk alongside you.

Gain the understanding and clarity you deserve.
